인터뷰365 김두호 인터뷰어= 우주는 우주의 티끌 같은 지구에 사는 인간의 과학이 풀어낼 수 없는 끝없이 신비로운 상상의 영역이다. 중진 아티스트 하정열 화백(1951∼)은 우주를 주제로 작품 활동을 하는 독창적인 ‘우주화가’다.
무한한 우주를 창작 마당으로 펼쳐놓고 삼라만상의 꿈과 희망, 사랑과 나눔, 교류와 융합, 소생 등이 다양하게 주제와 테마로 생성되는 그림언어를 보여주고 있다. 그의 우주를 향한 상상력과 화풍, 표현방식, 조형세계는 ‘우주미술’의 새로운 장르로 평가되기도 한다.
놀랍게도 그는 아티스트 세상과 동떨어진 육사 31기 육군 소장의 무관출신이다. 37년간 군복무를 하며 어깨에 번쩍거리는 별 두 개를 단 지휘관으로 사단장을 거쳐 3군사령부 부사령관을 지냈다. 대통령 국방비서관의 막강한 경륜도 있다.
지난 이력이 그저 평범하지가 않다. 이름부터 ‘정열’인 그는 통일과 평화를 소재로 한 장편소설 <통일 아리랑> 상하 시리즈를 비롯해 <한반도 희망이야기> <한반도 평화통일전략> <상호주의 전략> 등 출간한 통일 안보관련 전문 저서가 11권에 달한다.
여기에 미술작가로 대한민국미술전람회 종합대상과 뉴욕아트페어 미술부문 대상을 비롯해 국내외 미술전 수상 경력도 화려하다.
‘우주를 품은 대작품전’의 개인전시회만 지난 1월 마루아트센터(서울 인사동) 개최까지 17차례가 된다. 우주의 꿈을 비구상과 반구상으로 담아내는 그의 작품전은 100호가 넘는 대작들이 주로 선을 보인다. 창작과정이 특별한 것은 한국화로 통칭되는 동양화의 화구가 먹과 한지인데 하 화백은 여기에 서양의 기본 재료인 유채를 융합해 동서양의 재료와 사상을 아우르는 조형기법으로 작품 활동을 하고 있다.
한국미술국제교류협회 수석부이사장, 대한미술협회 고문 등을 맡고 있는 중진 화가로 2모작 삶의 무대를 미술로 옮긴 뒤에도 통일 안보분야 전문가로 한국안보통일연구원원장, 북한학 박사로 성균관대 국가전략대학원 겸임교수, 또 KBS 등에서 통일안보 관련 해설위원과 평론가로 활동해 왔다. 안보관계 발표 논문이 40여 편, 시인으로도 등단해 발표한 시집도 <삶의 흔적 돌> 등 5권이 있다.
‘우주화가 하정열’의 호는 ‘통일’(統一)이다. 민족의 염원인 통일이 자신의 평생 열망이기도 해 선뜻 작명한 호가 통일이다. 통일 하정열 화백은 인간의 지혜로 풀 수 없는 우주 삼라만상의 보이지 않는 섭리를 창작예술의 주제와 이념으로 추구하며 아티스트의 열정을 화폭에 담아내면서 틈틈이 소설을 쓰고 시도 발표한다. 또 한편은 국가안보 통일 분야의 전문가로 활동하면서 후반의 인생을 사통팔달의 재사(才士)로 펼쳐가고 있다.
우주에 꿈과 희망이 있다
-우주를 오르지 예술의 소재, 작품의 주제로 선택한 점이 특별하다. 우주는 하늘의 해와 달, 별자리를 바라보며 역사를 이어온 인류가 천문학으로 분류한 과학의 세계다. 우주를 그림의 주제로 삼게 된 이유나 목적은 무엇인가?
"지구를 우주에서 바라보면 아마도 조그마한 모퉁이 태양계의 모래알 같은 행성이다. 과학을 발전시켜온 인간들이 수천 년을 두고 연구해 왔지만 우주는 끝없이 광활하고 여전히 신비에 덮여있다. 기껏 눈앞에 있는 달이나 화성 탐사정도인데 970억 광년이라는 우주의 넓이에서 생각하면 걸음마 수준에도 못 미친다.
넓이도 깊이도 제대로 헤아리지 못하는 우주는 여전히 상상의 세계일뿐이다. 나는 지구에서 찰나를 살다가는 한시적인 작은 생명체라는 겸허한 정신으로 우리 인류의 아버지인 우주의 품에서 삼라만상 자연 현상을 상상하며 인간의 꿈과 희망, 사랑을 형상화 한 그림언어를 창작하고 있다.
인류는 과학이 발전할수록 탐구하며 사랑할 대상의 범주를 계속 넓혀왔다. 앞으로 지구에서의 삶이 더욱 팍팍해질수록 인류는 우주를 향해 꿈을 꾸고, 미래의 삶의 터전을 향해 도전하면서 다른 행성에서 희망을 찾을 것이다. 인류의 우주를 향한 탐험은 더욱 활성화 될 것이며, 우주를 향한 우리 인간의 시와 노래 및 그림은 더욱 구체화 될 것이다. 우주시대를 사는 화가로서 우주라는 주제를 선정하여 시대정신을 표현해보고 싶다."
- 억겁의 미스터리, 우주는 인간의 지능으로 풀어 갈 수 없는 아득한 상상의 세계인데, 오르지 우주를 통해 꿈과 희망을 표현하려는 아티스트의 의지와 집념, 의도는 무엇인가?
"우리 인간은 지구의 아들인 동시에 우주의 자식이다. 우리의 삶을 이해하기 위해서는 우주를 이해해야 한다. 우리는 우리의 고향인 우주를 동경하고 꿈을 꾼다. 우리는 우리의 뿌리인 우주를 바라보며 외경심을 갖는다. 우주에는 경외와 신비의 대상이 아닌 것이 없다. 한 가지 분명한 것은 앞으로 우리 인간은 우주를 향한 꿈을 갖고 우주의 수수께끼를 푸는데 한 발 더 다가설 것이고, 우주를 인간세계의 번영과 발전에 활용하면서 더불어 살아보려고 노력할 것이다. 즉 우주를 향한 꿈은 더욱 구체화되고, 희망은 더욱 현실화될 것이다. 나는 우주와 인간의 꿈과 희망이 긍정적으로 융합하는 모습을 그림을 통해 표현하려고 노력할 것이다.
다빈치는 그림을 통해 미래의 꿈과 과학을 예시하기도 했다. 우주는 먼 후손들이 찾아가고 개척해야할 미래의 세상이다. 내가 다빈치와 비교될 수는 없지만 그의 천재적 직관과 영감의 예술혼을 동경할 때도 있다. 나의 우주를 향한 작품세계가 우주의 어떤 이미지를 예시한다는 따위의 말은 경망스럽지만 그림 한 점마다 우주의 기운이나 영감을 느끼며 만든다는 생각을 버리지 못하고 있다.
우주 그림은 언제나 조심스럽다. 작가로서의 상상력은 제한이 없지만 우주는 허상이 아니고 과학탐구의 대상인 실존의 세계다. 끝없이 광활한 표현의 세계이고 신앙과도 같아서 작품 한 점마다 진실되고 경건한 마음으로 주제를 가져오고 있다.
그래서 나의 우주 그림의 주제들은 아름답고 황홀한 꿈과 희망, 신비와 소망, 삼라만상 자연현상과 생명 예찬, 나눔, 사랑, 융합 등 인간사회가 느끼는 행복한 요소들이 대부분이다. 작가인 내 나름의 우주적 상상을 조합하고 창출하며 다양한 그림언어, 그림예술로 표현하고 있다. 매번 혼신을 다하면서도 늘 부족하고 송구스럽다는 여운도 따른다.
감히 우주를 창작의 보고(寶庫)로 생각하면서 앞으로도 나는 해와 달 그리고 별 등 우주가 우리 인간에게 하고 싶은 이야기를 그림으로 표현하고 싶다. 따라서 앞으로 우주에 대한 나의 그림은 우주에 뿌리를 둔 존재에 대한 번민과 탐구의 결과물이 될 것이다. 6월 1일부터 30일까지 한 달 동안 현대백화점 디큐브시티점에서 우주를 주제로한 작품 25점을 가지고 초대 개인전을 하는데, 관람하러 오시면 저의 작품세계를 잘 설명드리겠다."
한국형 전투기 개발의 추억
- 최근 SNS에서 DJ(김대중 전 대통령) 시대 청와대 국방비서관으로 재직한 사실을 밝혔다. 그때 한국형 전투기(KF- 21) 개발사업을 기획 추진하고 참여한 과거를 생각하며 시제1호기 출고식 보도 뉴스를 보고 올린 감격적인 소회를 읽었다. 먼저 그 시절의 비화를 밝힐 수 있는가?
"DJ는 튼튼한 안보와 평화통일정책을 함께 추진했다. 2000년도에 튼튼한 안보의 큰 축인 전력증강사업은 IMF를 겪은 뒤라 엄청난 도전과 모험이 따랐다. 당시 미국에서 도입해오는 첨단 전투기 F-15K 도입가격이 대당 1천억 원이 넘었다. 40대 도입에 4조2000억 원이 필요했다.
나는 한반도 평화를 위해 남북화해와 함께 튼튼한 안보가 구축되어야 하고, 이를 위해 국산전투기의 개발필요성을 강조하며, KF-21 개발사업 추진과 국산전투기 개발의 비전을 제시했다. 뜻을 함께한 대통령께서 2002년 공군사관학교 졸업식 축사를 통해 국산전투기의 개발 필요성과 비전을 언급했고, 시제기가 그로부터 20여년 만에 선을 보였으니 감개무량할 수밖에 없다. 세계에서 몇 손가락 안에 꼽히는 최신형 전투기 생산국가가 된 것이 자랑스럽다."
- DJ정부에서 경의선 철도 복원사업, 개성공단 추진 계획이 쏟아져 나올 시기도 하 화백의 국방비서관 재임 시기가 아닌가?
"맞다. 경의선 철도 복원사업은 DMZ를 비롯해 남북 양쪽의 철책과 군사요충지역을 통과하는 국가안보와 직결되는 사업으로 국방비서관이 주무비서관으로 참여할 수 있었다. 그런데 당시 미국 부시 대통령이 북한을 세계 4대 악의 축으로 강성 비난발언을 하면서 대북관계에 긴장감이 고조되었다.
군사동맹관계인 미국의 협력 없이는 대북 추진사업이 쉽게 진전될 수 없는 상황이었다. 그런데 부시 대통령이 방한해 경의선 연결 출발 지점인 DMZ 도라산역에서 김대중 대통령과 함께 철도 침목 두 개에 축하 서명을 하는 극적인 남북 평화협력과 관련한 인식 전환의 프로그램이 성사되었다. 그때 나는 임동원 특보와 함께 현장을 안내하고 준비하는 임무를 수행했다."
- DJ는 국방안보보다는 남북화해정책 추진에 비중을 둔 대통령으로 알고 있는 사람이 많다.
"김대중 대통령님은 국가안보와 남북화해협력정책은 수레의 양 바퀴와 같다고 생각하셨다. 즉 대한민국이 화해와 협력정책을 추진하기 위해서는 튼튼한 국가안보가 뒷받침되어야 한다고 늘 강조하셨다.
김대통령님은 국방력의 우위 확보로 통일에 이른 독일이 우리의 롤 모델이라고 생각하셨다. 그당시 청와대에 근무한 비서관 모두가 햇볕정책에서 국가안보의 중요성을 알고 있었다. 나는 한국의 현대사를 연구해보면, 우리 정부 지도자들이 평화통일이 국가안보의 튼튼한 기반 위에서 가능하다는 인식을 함께 했다고 생각한다. 노무현 대통령 때의 이라크 파병이나 한미동맹을 중시하는 국가전략 등은 강한 국가안보 구축을 위한 지도자의 결단으로 봐야한다."
문학 소년이 육군사관학교로 간 까닭
- 화가의 꿈은 어릴 때부터 싹튼 것인가?
"아니다. 내 고향은 정읍이다. 선친은 선비 기질의 평온하고 조용한 삶을 사셨다. 나는 병정놀이를 좋아하는 개구쟁이로 자랐으나 화가나 군인이 될 생각을 하지 않았다. 오히려 문학 소년으로 성장기를 보냈다.
중학 입시가 있을 때 1등으로 정읍 호남중에 진학해 줄곧 성적이 뛰어나 중3때 서울 명문고 진학을 원했지만, 김인겸 담임선생과 학교측에서 호남고에 진학해주기를 바래 중학교와 한 교정에 있는 호남고에 진학해 문학소년의 꿈을 키웠다. 백일장에서 장원도 하고 교과서에서 만난 박목월, 조지훈, 서정주, 박두진 선배님들의 시를 즐겨 암송하고 다녔다. 낭만파 바이런의 시집을 끼고 다니기도 했고 특별히 이육사의 시를 모조리 외우며 독립운동 시대의 민족 기개를 동경하기도 했다."
- 어쩌다 육군사관학교를 택했나?
"공부 좀 하면 서울법대를 권하던 때에 주변 어른들도 나의 진로를 그쪽으로 정해주었다. 그러나 입시시험 점수에 맞추다보니 서울대의 다른 학과를 지망했다가 뜻밖에 낙방, 재수를 하게 되었다. 그런 시련기에 선배가 준 이기백 교수의 ‘한국사’를 읽고 분단국가의 과제인 통일에 관심을 가지게 되었다. 통일의 원대한 꿈을 성취하는 무관이 되고 싶었다.
육사를 지망해 면접을 볼 때 면접관이 “왜 육사를 지망했는가?”라는 질문에 “우리나라 남북통일에 기여하고 싶다. 통일국가의 대통령이 꿈이다”고 서슴없이 대답했다.
1학년 때는 단 한명을 선발하는 독일 사관학교 파견 유학생으로 선발되는 행운이 따랐다. 그 시험 때도 입학 때의 면접관 교수를 만났는데 ‘통일 대통령을 꿈꾸던 생도’로 확실하게 기억하고 있었다. 통일을 꿈꾸며 진로를 선택한 군인으로서의 내 인생에서 독일 유학은 예기치 않게 피할 수 없는 운명처럼 다가왔다. 군인 신분으로 여러 차례 교육, 연구와 교환교관 파견 활동을 위해 독일과 인연을 이어가면서, 독일은 나의 일생에서 잊을 수 없는 제2의 조국이 되었다."
- 독일 육군사관학교 유학시절 이야기를 들려 달라.
"유학 당시에 독일 육군사관학교는 3년제 과정으로 입학했을 때 가장 난관은 고교시절 제2외국어로 공부한 독일어로는 감당할 수 없는 언어 장벽이었다. 그것을 극복하기 위해 교과 내용을 통째 암기하는 방법을 택했다. 시험 답안지 작성에 암기 내용 중 핵심만 열거하니 성적은 1등 졸업으로 이어졌다. 각종 운동 종목을 통한 체력 성적도 1등 수준을 기록해 귀국할 무렵 여러 언론에 뉴스 인물로 소개되기도 했다."
- 입학은 국내 육사, 졸업은 독일 육사였으니 교육과정이 남다르다.
"그런데 3년제인 독일 육사는 졸업 후 국내 육사와 달리 학사학위 인정이 안 되어 다시 서강대 독문학과 위탁 교육을 통해 학위를 받아야 했다. 그 후 전방 소대장과 중대장 시절을 거쳐 교환교관단장으로도 독일을 다녀온 때도 있었다. 소령 때도 다시 독일 참모대학에 들어가 우등상을 받으며, 수료과정을 거치는 동안 브란트, 슈미트 정부의 슬기롭고 합리적인 통일정책이 발전되는 과정을 현지에서 지켜볼 수 있었다. 특히 좌우 이념을 극복하며 동독과 협력을 시도하면서 동방정책을 추진하는 민족적이고 정치적인 역량은 놀라운 점이 많아 큰 교훈을 얻었다."

<Painter Ha Jung-yul, a former division commander whom Kim Doo-ho met (1)>
Interview365 Dooho Kim Interviewer = The universe is an endlessly mysterious realm of imagination that cannot be solved by the science of humans living on a tiny thing of the universe. Artist Ha Jung-yul (1951~) is an original “painter of cosmos” who works on the theme of universe.
He unfolds the infinite universe as a workshop. And he shows the language of paintings in which dreams and hopes, love and sharing, exchange and fusion, and revitalization are created in various subjets and themes. His imagination, style, expression, and formative world toward the universe are also evaluated as a new genre of ‘art of the cosmos’.
Surprisingly, he is far from the world of the artist. who was graduated 31st from Korean Millytary Akademy. He served as a officer for 37 years, a general with two stars on his shoulders, as a division commander and then vice commander of the 3rd Army Command. He also has a mighty career as a defense secretary for the president Kim. His past history is not just common. From his name, ‘jung-yul which means Passion’, he has published novels on unification and national security such as <Unification Arirang> top and bottom series, <Story of Hope on the Korean Peninsula>, <Peaceful Unification Strategy on the Korean Peninsula> and <Reciprocity Strategy>. It reaches the volume.
In addition, as an art artist, he has won the Grand Prize at the Korea Art Exhibition and the Grand Prize in the Art Division at the New York Art Fair, as well as awards at domestic and international art exhibitions. Only the solo exhibition of the “Great Works with Universe” will be held 18 times until the Maru Art Center (Insa-dong, Seoul) was held in January. His exhibitions of cosmic dreams in both non-figured and hemispherical forms are mainly lined with larger than 160X130cm. What makes his creative process special is that Ha is working on art with a formative technique that encompasses Eastern and Western materials and ideas. Ha is working on art by fusing ‘Hanji and Korean Ink’ which is a basic Eastern material. and ‘Canvas and Oil’, which is a basic Western material.
He is a senior vice-president of the Korea Fine Arts International Association and an advisor to the Korean Fine Arts Association. He is an expert in the field of unification and national security after moving his life to art. He is also an adjunct professor of National Strategy at Sungkyunkwan University. He has also worked as a commentator and critic on unification and national security at KBS. There are more than 40 theses on his security relations presentation, and 5 poetry books, including <The Traces of Life>, a collection of poetry published as a poet.
The nickname of “space painter Ha Jung-yul” is “Unification”(統一). Unification of the Korean Peninsula, which is the longing of his people, is also his lifelong aspiration. Painter Ha Jung-yul pursues the invisible providence of the universe, which cannot be solved by human wisdom, as the theme and ideology of creative art. He writes novels and attempts presentations in his spare time while embedding the passion of the artist on the canvas. On the other hand, while working as an expert in the field of national security and unification, he is spreading his second half of his life as a all-round player.
There are dreams and hopes in the universe.
- It is special that the universe was chosen as the subject of the ascent art and the subject of the work. The universe is a scientific world classified as astronomy by humans who have continued their history looking at the sun, moon and constellations in the sky. What was the reason or purpose of making the universe as the subject of painting?
"Looking at Earth from universe, it's probably a small corner of the solar system's sand-like planet. Humans who have developed science have been studying it for thousands of years, but the universe is endlessly vast and still covered with mysteries. At most, it's about the moon or Mars exploration in front of you, but when you think about it in the space of 97 billion light-years, it doesn't even reach the level of a toddler.
The universe, which cannot be properly measured in both width and depth, is still only a world of imagination. With the humble spirit of being a temporary little creature that lives for a moment on Earth, I imagine the natural phenomena in the arms of the universe, our father of mankind, and create a picture language that embodies human dreams, hopes, and love.
As science progresses, humanity has continued to expand the scope of things to be loved and explored. As life on Earth gets worse in the future, mankind will dream of space and find hope on other planets while challenging for the future living grounds. Mankind's exploration into the universe will be more active, and our human poetry, songs, and pictures toward the universe will become more concrete. As a painter living in the cosmos age, I want to express the spirit of the times by selecting the theme of cosmos."
-The mystery of regret, the universe is a world of distant imagination that cannot be solved by human intelligence. What is the artist's will, tenacity, and intention to express dreams and hopes through the universe?
"We humans are both the sons of the Earth and the children of the universe. To understand our life, we must understand the universe. We long for and dream of the universe, our hometown. We have a sense of awe as we look at our roots, the universe. There is nothing in the universe that is not the object of awe and mystery. One thing is clear: In the future, we humans will have a dream for the universe, take one step closer to solving the mystery of the universe, and try to live together while utilizing the universe for the prosperity and development of the human world. In other words, dreams for the universe will become more concrete, and hopes will become more real. I will try to express the positive fusion of the dreams and hopes of the universe and humans through paintings.
Leonardo Da Vinci illustrated future dreams and science through paintings. The universe is the world of the future that distant descendants must visit and pioneer. Although I cannot be compared to Da Vinci, there are times when I long for his genius intuition and inspirational art spirit. It is regrettable to say that the world of my work toward the universe exemplifies an image of the universe, but I cannot give up the idea that I make it while feeling the energy or inspiration of the universe for each picture.
Paintings of Universe are always cautious. There is no limit to my imagination as a artist, but the universe is not an illusion, but a world of existence that is the subject of scientific exploration. It is a world of endlessly expansive expressions and is like faith, so every piece of work brings a theme with a sincere and reverent heart.
So, the themes of my universe paintings are mostly beautiful and enchanting dreams and hopes, mysteries and hopes, the sacramental natural phenomena and the praise of life, sharing, love, and fusion, the happy elements that human society feels. As an artist, I combine and create my own cosmic imagination, and express it in various painting languages and painting art. Even though I do my best every time, there is also the lingering lingering that it is always lacking and regrettable. Dare to think of the universe as a treasure trove of creation, and in the future, I would like to express the story that the universe wants to tell us humans, such as the sun, moon, and stars. Therefore, in the future, my picture of the universe will be the result of anguish and exploration of beings rooted in the universe. Memories of the development of Korean fighter jets(KF-21)
-Recently, on social media, you revealed that you served as a defense secretary at the Blue House in the era of DJ (Former President Kim Dae-jung). At that time, you planned and promoted the development project of the Korean type fighter (KF-21) and took part in the past. And I read the thrilling remarks you posted after watching the news about the release ceremony of the eXperimental 1 unit. Can you first reveal the secret story of those days?
"DJ promoted a policy of strong security and peaceful reunification together. In 2000, the power reinforcement project, a major pillar of strong security, was subject to tremendous challenges and adventures following the IMF. At that time, the cost of introducing the advanced fighter F-15K introduced from the United States exceeded 100 billion won per unit. It required 4.2 trillion won for the introduction of the 40s. For peace on the Korean peninsula, strong security must be established along with inter-Korean reconciliation, and for this, I emphasized the necessity of development of domestic fighters, and presented a vision of promoting the KF-21 development project and developing domestic fighters. The President, who shared the will, mentioned the necessity and vision of the development of a Korean fighter through a congratulatory speech at the graduation ceremony of the Air Force Academy in 2002, and it is inevitable that the prototype was shown good after 20 years. We are proud to have become one of the world's leading producers of the latest fighter jets."
-Isn't the time when the DJ government's plans to restore the Gyeongui Line railway and the Kaesong Industrial Complex pour out? Isn't it the time when you did your duty in office as the defense secretary?
"Right. The Gyeongui Line Railroad Restoration Project was a project that is directly connected to national security passing through the DMZ, barbed-wire fences on both sides of the North and South, and military critical areas. And the defense secretary was able to participate as the main secretary. However, at the time, when President Bush made a strong criticism of North Korea as one of the world's four major evils, tensions in relation to North Korea rose.
Without the cooperation of the United States, which is a military alliance, the project to promote North Korea could not proceed easily. However, a program to transform the perception of dramatic inter-Korean peace cooperation was concluded in which President Bush made a congratulatory sign on two railroad ties with President Kim Dae-jung at Dorasan Station in the DMZ, the starting point of the Gyeongui Line connection. At that time, I performed the task of guiding and preparing the site with the special advisor Lim Dong-won."
-Many people know that DJ is the president who puts more emphasis on promoting inter-Korean reconciliation policy rather than national defense and security.
"President Kim Dae-jung thought that national security and inter-Korean reconciliation and cooperation policies were the same as both wheels of a wagon. In other words, he always emphasized that in order for the Republic of Korea to promote reconciliation and cooperation policies, strong national security must be supported.
President Kim thought that Germany, which reached unification by securing the superiority of national defense power, was our role model. When I study the modern history of Korea, I think that the leaders of our government shared the recognition that peaceful reunification is possible on a solid foundation of national security. The dispatch of troops to Iraq during the time of President Roh Moo-hyun and the national strategy that emphasized the ROK-US alliance should be viewed as a leader's determination to build strong national security."
The reason why the literature boy went to the korean military academy
- Did the painter's dream sprout from childhood?
"No. My hometown is Jeongeup. My father lived a calm and quiet life with a scholarly temperament. I grew up as a naughty boy who likes to play soldiers, but I didn't think of becoming an artist or soldier. Rather, I grew up as a literary boy.
When I got the first Place in the middle school entrance exam and studyed very hard, I wanted to go to a prestigious high school in Seoul. But I went on to go to Honam Middle School, Jeongeup, becouse the homeroom teacher In-gyeom Kim and the school guided to go to Honam High School. Raised the boy's dream. I enjoyed reciting the poems of Park Mok-wol, Jo Ji-hoon, Seo Jeong-ju, and Park Doo-jin, whom I met in a textbook. I wore the poems of romantic Byron, and I especially memorized all the poems of Lee Yuk-sa and admired the spirit of the nation in the era of the independence movement."
- How did you choose the Military Academy?
"When I recommended College of Law at the Seoul National University, the adults around me also decided my career path. However, when I matched the score of the entrance exam, I was applying for another department at Seoul National University and unexpectedly dropped out and retaken. During such an ordeal, I read Prof. Ki-Baek Lee's “Korean History” given by my senior, and became interested in unification, the task of the divided nation. I wanted to become a military officer who fulfills the grand dream of reunification.
When interviewing for KMA, the interviewer asked, “Why did you choose to study in KMA?” “I want to contribute to the reunification of the South and North Korea. I replied without hesitation, saying, "It is a dream to be the president of a unified korea."
When I was in the first year, I was lucky to be selected as an international student sent to the German Military Academy, which selected only one. During that exam, I met a professor who was an interviewer at the time of admission, and He remembered it clearly as a cadet who dreamed of becoming a president of unified korea. In my life as a soldier who dreamed of reunification and chose a career path, studying in Germany unexpectedly came to me like an inevitable fate. As a soldier, I continued to ties with Germany for education, research, and dispatch of exchange instructors several times, making Germany an unforgettable second homeland in my life."
- Tell us your story when you were studying abroad at the German Military Academy.
"When I entered the German Military Academy as a three-year course, the biggest challenge was a language barrier that could not be handled by German, who studied as a second foreign language in high school. In order to overcome it, I chose a method of memorizing the entire contents of the subject. In the test answer sheet, only the core of the memorized content was listed, so the grades led to first place graduation. My physical fitness through various sports were also ranked first, and I was introduced as a news figure in various media when I returned home."
- Admission was from domestic KMA and graduation from German Military Akademy, so the curriculum is different.
"However, after graduating from a three-year German Military Academy, the bachelor's degree was not recognized, so I had to obtain a degree through commissioned education in Sogang University's German Literature Department. After that, I traveled to Germany as an exchange instructor. When I was a major, I went back to the German Chief of Staff, I received an honors award. And I was able to watch the development of the wise and rational unification policy of the Brandt and Schmidt governments locally. In particular, national and political capacity to promote Eastern policy while overcoming his left-right ideology and attempting to cooperate with East Germany has many surprising points and learned a great lesson."
